What counts as a long distance move?
There is no official definition. A move becomes long distance when it is planned around the trip rather than around the hours. For us the real dividing line is a day’s drive, because it changes how your belongings travel and how the price is built.
| Where you are going | How it travels | The price |
|---|---|---|
| Up to about a day’s drive: Quebec City, Ottawa and Gatineau, Toronto | The truck loaded at your place drives straight to your new address, the same day or the next morning | Published ranges for each corridor |
| Farther in Canada: Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, the Maritimes | In a long-haul United Van Lines moving van | Written quote |
| United States | In a long-haul United Van Lines moving van, with customs planned before departure | Written quote |
| Overseas | By sea or by air with our international partners, door to door or port to port | Written quote |
We tell you which of these applies when we quote, along with the planned loading and delivery dates.

How much does a long distance move cost?
On our corridors, for a small to mid sized home and before taxes, expect $1,800 to $2,500 to Quebec City, $1,300 to $2,200 to Ottawa and Gatineau, and $2,800 to $4,000 to Toronto. Larger homes go above those ranges.
Beyond those corridors, prices vary with the destination. The price of a move to Calgary, Halifax or Florida depends on six things that change completely from one move to the next:
- The distance between the two addresses.
- The weight of your belongings, which we estimate from your inventory or from an in-person or virtual visit.
- The destination itself: some cities have their own charges, and some addresses need a ferry crossing, such as Vancouver Island or Newfoundland.
- The date, with summer and month ends the busiest periods. A tight deadline or a fixed delivery date also costs more than a flexible delivery window.
- The services and special items: packing, storage, a piano, antiques, artwork or heavy pieces that need extra protection or handling.
- The paperwork: a move to the United States or overseas adds customs documents, which we plan with you before departure.
Your moving consultant walks you through the services you need, gives you a few options and explains the price of each, so you can choose what fits. For a larger home, we also offer a free estimate visit, in person or virtually.
How does a long distance move with Flex work?
- The quote. Describe your move and your moving consultant goes over the services and options with you, so you can choose what fits. For a larger home, the free estimate visit can be in person or virtual.
- Inventory and dates. Your quote states what is included, the loading date and the planned delivery dates, before you book anything.
- Packing. Pack yourself with boxes from our online store, delivered with the move, or let our crews pack all or part of the home with our packing services. On a long trip, good packing matters even more.
- Loading. Every piece is wrapped in blankets and strapped, and the inventory is checked before departure.
- Delivery. Your belongings are unloaded at your new address. If the two dates do not line up, storage is available in between.

What about moving to the United States?
A move to the United States travels in a long-haul United Van Lines moving van, anywhere in the country and in both directions, including a move back to Montreal. The difference is the paperwork: a detailed inventory of your belongings for U.S. customs and, for a return to Canada, a list of your goods for the CBSA. Your moving consultant plans it with you before we set the loading date. The documents, the steps and what drives the price are all on our cross-border movers page.
What about moving overseas?
We also handle moves outside North America, with our international partners. We pack your belongings in Montreal with export-grade materials and crate fragile or valuable pieces. They then travel by sea, which costs less, or by air, which is faster, door to door or port to port. The timeline depends on the destination, the transport you choose and customs clearance in the country of arrival.

Customs documents vary from one country to another: your moving consultant tells you which ones apply and when to prepare them. If your departure and your arrival do not line up, storage is available before you leave. All the details are on our international moving page.
What should you plan for when you change provinces or countries?
Before the date, call your home insurer: your policy often covers your belongings during a move, but changing provinces or countries can change that coverage. After the move, your driver’s licence, registration, car insurance and health card move to the new province, each on its own deadline, and your address changes go to both governments.
For the United States or overseas, customs formalities come on top. We explain them on our cross-border moving and international moving pages.

Questions about long distance moving
What is considered a long distance move?
Any move that leaves Greater Montreal. Up to about a day's drive, the truck loaded at your place drives straight to your new address. Beyond that, your belongings travel in a long-haul United Van Lines moving van.
Do you move to the United States?
Yes, anywhere in the United States and in both directions, with United Van Lines. Customs is planned before departure, and we explain the documents to prepare when we quote.
Do you also move overseas?
Yes, with our international partners. We pack your belongings in Montreal for export, and they travel by sea or by air, door to door or port to port. Your moving consultant tells you which customs documents apply to your destination.
Do you also move people to Montreal?
Yes. As a member of United Van Lines, we serve all of North America, so a move from Calgary, Toronto or Boston to Montreal works the same way as a move out of Montreal.
Why don't you show a price for Calgary or Vancouver?
Because it depends on the distance, the weight of your belongings, the destination (city charges, ferries), the date, the services and, for the United States, the paperwork. Your moving consultant gives you a few options and the price of each, and for a larger home we offer a free estimate visit, in person or virtual.
Are my belongings insured during the trip?
Yes. How your belongings are protected in transit is explained in the quote, before you book. Also call your home insurer: changing provinces or countries can change your coverage.
When is the best time of year for a long distance move?
Fall and spring, and the middle of the month, when there is more choice of dates. Summer, especially from May 20 to July 10, and month ends are the busiest periods. Winter moves work too: just leave a little room in your dates for the weather.
