What movers cost in Montreal depends first on the type of move. A local move is billed at an hourly rate from $85 to $195 depending on crew size, a long-distance move is calculated on the weight of your belongings, and a commercial move is quoted on the scope of work involved.

That’s why a single advertised price tells you very little. This page explains how each model works, what’s included, and what moves the final number — so you can compare the quotes you receive knowing what you’re looking at.

How Is the Cost of a Move Calculated?

We use three pricing models, one per type of move. The model is chosen to reflect the work actually involved, not to look best in an advertisement.

Type of move Basis What moves the price
Local (Greater Montreal) Hourly rate, by truck size and number of movers Actual duration, access, volume, time of year
Long distance (interprovincial, international) Weight of goods + additional services Weight, distance, packing, storage, bulky items, installation
Commercial Estimated scope of work, or a budget set with you Square footage, specialised equipment, schedule, after-hours work

All three share one thing: the amount is set before the move, in writing, and nothing appears afterwards.

THE LOWEST PRICE ISN’T ALWAYS THE BEST PRICE
In our experience, one of the most common mistakes is comparing two moving quotes based only on the advertised hourly rate. A rate of $120/hour may look more attractive than $140/hour, but if the estimated time is too low or certain fees are not clearly disclosed, the final cost can end up being higher. In fact, a 2026 survey of 1,000 people who had recently moved found that 16% paid more than their initial estimate and 13% encountered unexpected fees. At Flex Moving, we prefer to provide a realistic estimate from the start: when comparing quotes, look beyond the hourly rate and consider the estimated time, number of movers, and what is actually included in the price.

What Is the Hourly Rate for Movers in Montreal?

A local move is billed at an hourly rate based on truck size and the number of movers assigned. Billing starts when our team arrives at your pickup address and ends once the last item is unloaded at your new one.

Crew Rate
Truck with driver $85 / hour
Truck with 2 movers $125 / hour
Truck with 3 movers $165 / hour
Truck with 4 movers $195 / hour

Each rate includes the fully equipped truck, protective equipment, fuel and mileage for a local move, and liability coverage.

These are regular-season rates. They rise during peak moving season, between May 20 and July 10 — contact us for the rates that apply in that window.

Worth saying plainly: adding a mover raises the hourly rate but usually cuts the number of hours. A crew too small for the volume frequently costs more in total than a correctly sized one. That’s why we recommend a crew size rather than letting you shop the lowest hourly figure.

What Does It Cost to Move a 3½, 4½ or 5½?

Apartment size mainly determines two things: how many hours, and the crew size we’d recommend. In Montreal a 3½ or 4½ generally moves in half a day with two movers, while a 5½ or a house needs a larger crew.

What really drives the duration isn’t the number of rooms — it’s the floor, the staircase and the parking. A ground-floor 4½ with direct truck access moves faster than a third-floor 3½ up an exterior spiral staircase.

We don’t publish flat packages by apartment size, because a package quoted without seeing the access almost always turns into a surcharge on moving day. The quote accounts for access from the start.

How Is a Long-Distance Move Priced?

A long-distance move isn’t billed hourly. It’s based on the weight of your belongings and the distance, plus whichever services you choose. Weight is established from an inventory taken before the move, which fixes the amount in advance rather than leaving it to be discovered on arrival.

The reason is simple: how long a long-distance trip takes depends on things outside your control and ours — traffic, weather, regulated driving hours. Billing that trip by the hour would hand you that risk. Pricing by weight fixes the number regardless of how long the drive takes.

Additional services are added as needed:

  • Packing — by weight or by item, full or partial
  • Supplies — boxes, bubble wrap, stretch film, protection
  • Storage — short or long term, between departure and delivery
  • Bulky or specialty items — piano, safe, appliances, artwork
  • Assembly and disassembly — taken apart at origin, installed on arrival

We serve the Montreal to Quebec City and Montreal to Ottawa and Gatineau corridors and all of Quebec and Ontario, as well as interprovincial and international moves.

What Makes the Cost Go Up or Down?

Five factors explain most of the gap between two moves of comparable size. Knowing them lets you act on the final number before you even ask for a quote.

Time of year. Demand concentrates in summer, on weekends and at month’s end — July 1 being the absolute peak in Quebec. Booking midweek or off-season gets better rates and more choice of dates.

Distance. Local and long-distance moves follow different models. Over long distances, fuel, road time and sometimes crew lodging enter the calculation.

Volume. How much furniture and how many belongings directly determines truck size and crew size. Getting rid of what isn’t coming with you reduces volume, and therefore cost.

Access. Stairs, narrow hallways, no elevator, distant parking — all of it lengthens the handling.

Additional services. Professional packing, furniture disassembly and reassembly, and storage add to the total. They’re also the services that make the biggest difference to how stressful the day is.

What’s Included in the Price?

Every rate includes the fully equipped truck, protective equipment, local fuel and mileage, and liability coverage. Our moves are fully insured, and they’re carried out by our own crews.

What’s never included without discussing it with you first: packing supplies, packing service, storage, and handling of specialty items. Those appear on your quote if you asked for them, and nowhere else.

What About a Commercial Move?

A commercial move is quoted on the scope of work, or built around a budget set with you, because the real cost of an office move is measured as much in business interruption as in truck hours.

The first step is an assessment, on site or remote, which establishes the plan, the schedule and the amount. Full details on our commercial moving and office moving pages.

Our Promise

We’re conservative with our promises and liberal with the results.

We’re not trying to be the cheapest. We’re trying to be the company whose quoted price matches the final price, whose crew shows up on time, and whose truck leaves without having marked up your stairwell.

In practice: a clear written quote before the move, with no hidden fees. A trained, insured crew employed by Flex, never subcontracted. A plan built around your actual needs rather than a generic package. And a company registered with the Commission des transports du Québec, recommended by CAA Québec, and a member of the Canadian Association of Movers and the United Van Lines Canada network.

At Flex Moving, the priority is simple: a reliable, professional, high-quality moving service from first contact through to the delivery of your last piece of furniture.

Moving price FAQ

Does the hourly rate start when you leave your warehouse?

No. Billing starts when our team arrives at your pickup address and ends once the last item is unloaded at your new one.

Are prices higher in summer and on July 1?

Yes. The rates shown are regular-season rates and rise during peak season, between May 20 and July 10. Contact us for the rates that apply on those dates.

Do you offer a flat price instead of an hourly rate?

For a local move we bill hourly because that reflects the actual work. For a long-distance move the amount is fixed in advance based on weight and the services you choose.

Why isn't a long-distance move billed by the hour?

Because trip duration depends on traffic, weather and regulated driving hours. Pricing by weight fixes the amount in advance, regardless of how long the drive takes.

Are fuel and mileage charged separately?

No. For a local move they're included in the hourly rate, along with the equipped truck, protective equipment and liability coverage.
