Moving from Montreal to Vancouver, Calgary or Edmonton is among our most popular long distance moves, and we handle just as many in the other direction. It’s a trip of close to 4,000 kilometres, so the planning counts as much as the driving. Heading west or coming back east, we pack and load your home, your belongings travel with United Van Lines, and they arrive at your new address on the delivery dates planned with you.

How does a move from Montreal to Western Canada work?

It starts with the inventory, because the inventory sets both the price and the plan. From your list of belongings, or a free in-home estimate for a large house, we estimate the weight of your move and give you a written quote with the loading date and the planned delivery dates.

On loading day, every piece is wrapped in blankets and strapped, and the inventory is checked before departure. The trip takes several days. In winter, weather across Northern Ontario and through the Rockies can slow the road down, and we plan for it. At the other end, your belongings are unloaded at your new address, and if the two dates do not line up, storage is available in between.

Destination Distance by road To take care of when you arrive
Calgary About 3,700 km Alberta driver’s licence within 90 days
Edmonton About 3,600 km Alberta driver’s licence within 90 days
Vancouver About 4,800 km B.C. driver’s licence within 90 days

How much does it cost to move from Montreal to Calgary or Vancouver?

We do not publish a range for Western Canada, because the price depends on five things that vary from one move to the next: the exact distance, the weight of your belongings, the destination (some cities have their own charges, and Vancouver Island needs a ferry crossing), the date, and the services you hand to us, such as packing or storage.

One piece of advice if you compare quotes: check that they all start from the same inventory. A lower quote that leaves out half the basement is not a better price, it is an incomplete one. Ours states in writing what it covers, with no hidden fees.

What should you prepare before you leave?

  1. Sort before the inventory. Weight is part of the price: whatever you give away or sell before the quote does not have to cross the country.
  2. Decide who packs. Pack yourself with boxes from our online store, delivered with the move, or let our crews do it with our packing services.
  3. Keep the essentials with you. Your belongings arrive a few days after you do: important documents, jewellery, medication, your computer and clothes for the first week travel in your luggage.
  4. Book access at both ends. Elevator and parking in Montreal, and the same at the other end if you are moving into a tower.
  5. Call your home insurer. Your policy often covers your belongings during a move, but changing provinces can change that coverage.

What do you need to do when you arrive in Alberta or British Columbia?

For transporting your belongings, nothing: it is a move between two provinces. What changes concerns you once you arrive. In both Alberta and British Columbia you have 90 days to exchange your licence in Alberta or switch it over in B.C.. Registration, car insurance and your health card follow, and your address changes go to both governments. We do not handle those, but we remind you, because they are what people forget most often.

Questions about moving from Montreal to Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver

How long does a move from Montreal to Vancouver take?

The trip takes several days. Your loading date and planned delivery dates are written on your quote, before you book.

Do you also move from Calgary, Edmonton or Vancouver to Montreal?

Yes, in both directions, the same way, on the United Van Lines network.

Do you serve Vancouver Island and the rest of Alberta and British Columbia?

Yes. The United Van Lines network covers the whole province. A destination that needs a ferry crossing, such as Vancouver Island, affects the price, and the quote shows it.

Why is there no price listed for Western Canada?

Because it depends on distance, the weight of your belongings, the destination, the date and the services. We give you a written quote from your inventory, with a free in-home estimate for a large house.

Are my belongings insured during the trip?

Yes. How your belongings are protected in transit is explained in the quote, before you book. Also call your home insurer, because changing provinces can change your coverage.
