Small Moves and Single Item Movers in Montreal
A Correctly Sized Crew, Even for Three Pieces of Furniture

A small move in Montreal is not a lesser job, it is a job that needs a correctly sized crew. Our default is two movers with a truck, on a two hour minimum that varies with the distance and the addresses. Some jobs need only one person, and some need no truck at all. We tell you which of the three applies before you book.

What Counts as a Small Move?
A small move is a volume that fills part of a truck rather than a whole one. In practice that means a studio or a one bedroom, a few pieces of furniture, appliances, the contents of a single room, or shifting furniture around inside one address.
We take every size of job. What changes with a small volume is the shape of the cost rather than the service itself, and it is better to know that before you book.
How Much Does a Small Move Cost in Montreal?
Small moves are billed hourly from our regular rates, with a two hour billing minimum. Rates start at $85 an hour for a truck with one driver mover and $125 an hour for a truck with two movers.
| Crew | Regular hourly rate |
|---|---|
| Truck and 1 driver mover | $85 / hour |
| Truck and 2 movers | $125 / hour |
| Truck and 3 movers | $165 / hour |
| Truck and 4 movers | $195 / hour |
These rates are higher from May 20 to July 10. Billing starts when our crew arrives at your pickup address and stops once the last item is unloaded at the new one.
Something few movers say out loud: on the smallest jobs the cost per item is necessarily higher. Getting the truck there, the setup and the minimum time all spread across fewer pieces. That is arithmetic rather than a surcharge, and it is why a small move quote does not scale down neatly from a full move. Our moving price page sets out the full calculation.
Do You Actually Need a Truck?
For some jobs you do not, and we offer a no truck option with the truck fee taken off. It applies whenever nothing leaves the building.
The usual cases are easy to recognise:
- A move within the same building, between floors or between units
- Rearranging inside one house, clearing a bedroom down to the basement for instance
- Shifting heavy furniture for renovations, painting or a floor installation
- Assembly or disassembly on site, with no transport involved
This is the sort of job most moving companies turn down because there is no drive to bill. We take it, with the usual crew and the usual protective equipment, and the rate is confirmed at quote time from the duration and the access.
How Many Movers Does a Small Move Need?
Two movers cover the large majority of small moves, which is why that is our default. Below two, the work slows down more than it saves, because a two person sofa is still a two person sofa.
There is one useful exception. For transport rather than moving, pallets or materials or boxes already staged for loading, we offer a single driver mover with the truck, at $85 an hour. It is the lowest configuration on our rate card and it works precisely when the handling is simple and nobody needs to work a couch around a spiral staircase.
Adding a mover raises the hourly rate but often cuts the number of hours. On a small volume the arithmetic rarely favours an undersized crew.
Why There Is a Two Hour Minimum
The billing minimum is normally two hours and it depends on the distance and the addresses. It covers getting the crew and the truck to you, the setup, protecting the property and the work itself.
In practice almost no move finishes inside two hours once parking, floor protection and last minute packing are counted. The point is that the minimum is stated in advance rather than discovered on the invoice.
How Can You Keep a Small Move Affordable?
Real savings come from timing, volume and access, not from hunting the lowest hourly rate. An undersized crew at an attractive rate routinely costs more in total than a properly sized one at a slightly higher rate.
Three levers matter on a small move:
- The date. Outside May 20 to July 10 the rates are lower and the schedule has more room.
- The volume. Every box packed and taped before we arrive is billable time removed. Our boxes and supplies can be delivered with the move.
- The access. A parking spot held at the door and an elevator booked for the right hour save more time than any negotiation over the rate.
Small Move Checklist
- List the items, not the rooms. On a small volume it is the count of furniture and boxes that sets the finish time.
- Tell us if nothing leaves the building. That is what triggers the no truck option.
- Measure the bulkiest piece. A sofa bed and a 30 inch doorway are the usual source of moving day surprises.
- Book the parking and the elevator. On a two or three hour job, twenty minutes lost at the entrance is a real share of the bill.
- Pack before, not during. Open boxes turn directly into billable time.
- Ask which minimum applies to your address. It varies with distance and it is stated on your quote.

Small Move FAQ
Can a small move be booked at short notice?
Often yes, outside high season. Small jobs fit into a schedule more easily, though Saturdays and month ends stay the busiest slots.
Do you supply boxes and protective material?
Yes. Blankets, straps and floor protection are always part of the service, and boxes and packing supplies can be ordered from our online store for delivery with the move.
Are my belongings insured on a small job?
Yes, every move we perform is fully insured whatever its size. The coverage on three pieces of furniture is the same as on a whole house.
Do you handle small moves off the island of Montreal?
Yes, throughout Greater Montreal including Laval, the North Shore and the South Shore. Distance affects the applicable minimum and the travel time, and both are stated on your quote.
Will you move a single piece of furniture or one appliance?
Yes. A single item, a fridge, an upright piano or a washer and dryer set are routine jobs for us. The two hour minimum still applies, since the crew and the truck still travel to you.
